Luckily, he isn't harmed that badly and Erica's there for moral support in addition to helping him train and tend to his wounds, but it makes him ponder his reality. Ever since he killed Gambino, his sword has always been at his side. Only when it broke in battle, did he take a new sword.

He left it behind when he left the Hawks, rather than having it repaired. Perhaps it represented all the sins he committed on Griffith's behalf and this was his way of cutting that tie, as a symbolic gesture of sorts. If his sword is truly a part of him, like he said, then leaving the old sword behind could be his own way of setting his sights for a life where he has no other master.

Making that decision is important, because he's never really had a choice for himself. It could be that if he never left Griffith, he'd end up like Godot, who was born in a blacksmith's family and took up the trade before he could walk. A man who yearns for improvement and greater heights until he grew old and still doesn't truly know why he keeps on striking the iron. Maybe he'd find one thing to enjoy, like Godot did: Transient, breathtaking things that remind him why he's still a blacksmith, remind him why he's still alive.

It strikes a chord with Guts, since sparks serve him, too. They represent everything that have defined him: And it gives him focus, as he's able to complete his training. He vows, then, to live a life where he serves no other master. Sparks will light his path and he'll live as he always had. It seems like he knew this before, even if it wasn't conscious of it, or that he was living this type of life already. If anyone could pick up on this, it'd probably be Griffith, but in any case, I'm glad that Guts finally found a purpose that he could be content with.

Of course, when one makes a choice, that choice will be tested. Just before he can leave Godot and Erica behind, a mercenary comes forth, wanting weapons for his allies.

In a routine of Guts parroting the man's questions hunting bandits? Looks like he has some work to do. I still think that he would have been fine if he stayed with Godot, but Guts isn't the type of guy to abandon friends in need. Meanwhile, the Hawks are on their last legs. Most of Griffith's army deserted after Griffith was arrested, and the ones that didn't sustained heavy injuries. Unfortunately, Griffith isn't faring as well. He's in Windham's deepest, darkest dungeon, and inhuman moans can be heard coming from his cell.

Maybe he's practicing his singing technique. Casca's struggling, too, barely able to stay awake and losing the last remaining vestiges of hope that she might still have. It's a damn good thing that Judeau's been at her side, giving her the support she needs to continue leading the Hawks and telling her to eat. Seriously, though, the fact that the Hawks still have the chance to mount an assault on Windham is a small miracle.
